Chapter Ten

“Good God, Miranda! What’s wrong?”

Miranda buried her face in her hands and sobbed. “Out there, Lucas! Outside the window!”

She heard him bolt from the bed and cross the room in a few easy strides, pulling the curtains wide open.

“What is it, darling?” His hands were on her shoulders, shaking her gently. “There’s nothing out there.”

Slowly Miranda lowered her hands from her eyes. Outside the window all was in darkness. “I saw it,” she whispered.

Behind them the bedroom door burst open. “Are you alright?” Selina was out of breath. “I heard someone scream.”

“What’s going on?” Victor stood behind her, his hair sticking out at odd angles.

“There was something there, outside the window,” Miranda’s voice shook. “A face.” She saw Lucas and Selina exchange a look. “I saw it Lucas! I know I did.”

“Shh now, darling. There’s nothing there. You must have been dreaming.”

A sudden fury made Miranda brave. She ran to the window and fumbled with the catch, pushing it open. The cold night air streamed into the room.

Moonlight sparkled on the snow. There was nothing there.

“I know what I saw.” But already she was less certain. She’d been asleep, after all; the sound had woken her. But perhaps she’d only thought she’d awoken? Perhaps it was like Lucas said – maybe it really had been a dream.

She pressed the balls of her hands against her eyes, willing her mind to clear. All the strange things she’d experienced since she’d got here – she’d been so sure they were real! But every time she’d been the only one to hear them, the only one to see them. She stared at Lucas, tears threatening to fall.

“Am I going mad, Lucas? Do you think I’m going mad?”

He led her back to the bed, sitting her down and gathering her to his side. “You’re over-tired, darling, that’s all. It’s all been too much for you.”

“Victor, warm some milk for Miranda,” Selina instructed. She joined them on the bed, taking a seat on Miranda’s other side. “Lucas is right, Manda darling. You need rest.” Selina stroked her hair. “Complete rest.”

Something in her tone made Miranda straighten up. “What do you mean, ‘complete rest’?”

Lucas took her hand. “We just think you’d be better off somewhere you’d get some real peace and quiet, darling. Time to recuperate properly.”

Miranda stared at him through her tears. “So you do think I’m mad!”

Selina stroked her hair again. “No-one’s saying that. It’s just obvious you’re finding things difficult at the moment. First you fainted up there in the attic, thinking someone was in there with you. Now you’re imagining faces at the window…”

Lucas was nodding. “You must see that you can’t go on like this, darling.”

“Here you are.”

Victor stood in front of her, holding out a glass of warm milk. Selina took it from him and pressed it to Miranda’s lips. “Drink up, sweetie. This will help you sleep.”

“I don’t want to sleep –”

But Selina tipped up the glass and Miranda had no choice but to open her mouth. “It tastes funny,” she mumbled.
